76ers Blog: Pre-Game Notes ~ 1/1/2014 @ Denver Nuggets

The Match-Up:
The 76ers (9-21; T4th-Atlantic Division, T13th-Eastern Conference) take the floor on the first day of the new 2014 calendar year, beginning the back-end of their six-game road trip with a Mile High-stop at the Denver Nuggets (14-16; 4th-Northwest Division, 11th-Western Conference).  The Sixers improved to 1-2 on their current trek, after their 111-104 victory against the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday night.  Not only did the outcome snap the team's 13-game road losing streak, it gave the Sixers road wins against the Lakers in consecutive seasons for the first time since the 1982-83 and 1983-84 campaigns.

The Denver Nuggets have dropped seven defeats in a row, marking their longest losing streak since finishing the 2002-2003 season in an eight-game slump.  Denver's troubles have come on the heels of promising 13-game stretch during which the Nuggets won 10 times.  Veteran NBA assistant coach Brian Shaw replaced Denver head coach George Karl - last year's coach of the year award recipient - this off-season; Shaw was a member of Phil Jackson's staff with the Los Angeles Lakers for two championship seasons, and most recently worked under Frank Vogel on the Indiana Pacers' bench.

76ers Theme:
Their last time out on Sunday, the 76ers earned an away win over the Los Angeles Lakers, 111-104, giving them just their second road victory of the season.  The Sixers only other triumph outside of their home at the Wells Fargo Center was on the team's second date of its schedule, a 109-102 decision at the Washington Wizards.

Another encouraging development that emerged from the Sixers' stop at Staples Center was that Evan Turner returned to action after sitting out one game due to right knee soreness.  Turner produced 22 points in the game, and - most importantly - got through the night without re-aggrevating his injury.
