76ers Blog: Training Camp Opens at Saint Joseph's

'In terms of approach, we won't skip steps' - 76ers head coach Brett Brown
This morning, the 76ers are conducting the first batch of formal practices for their training camp that runs through Wednesday at Hagan Arena on the campus of Saint Joseph's University. The team took the floor around 10:00 AM, and will go until about 1:00 PM; on-court activities will resume at 6:00 PM for a 2-hour evening workout. Head coach Brett Brown has scheduled double practice sessions for the first, second, and fourth days of the 5-day camp.
Brown emphasized earlier this week - as he did during his introductory press conference upon being hired in August - his belief that when it comes to creating the foundations for a team, there must be a thorough plan, and that there must be a complete commitment to all aspects of that plan. Ask Brown about when the end-game of his plan will ultimately bear itself out, and he'll understandably be reluctant to offer a timetable. He's dealing with an amazingly young roster - 14 of the 18 players reporting to training camp have 3 years' NBA experience or less - and a group that's thin at certain positions. Needless to write, there are a ton of unknowns.
Brown, though, has already given clues about some of the basic principles of his team-building blueprint. Mentioned this in yesterday's blog post, but Brown will demand his players get themselves into peak physical condition; as Brown recently put it, being in shape is a 'non-negotiable.' Given the team's youth, Brown also wants to see a competitive camp, and the emergence of high-energy players that respect the game.
The specifics of Brown's scheme, one that G Michael Carter-Williams said will be designed to tire out the opposition, and the roles that players will eventually occupy within that system will soon become more apparent. As for now, starting today, Brown, his coaching staff, and an overhauled group of 76ers will begin to take the initial, fundamental steps geared towards fulfilling the franchise's long-term vision of turning around its recent fortunes.
