Reports: Michael Young A Waived No-Trade Clause Away From Being A Phillie

According to multiple reports, the Phillies are on the verge of acquiring 36-year-old infielder Michael Young from the Texas Rangers.

ESPN’s Jayson Stark is reporting that the deal has been agreed upon in principle and that the ball is in Young’s court as to whether or not he will waive his full no-trade clause to come to Philadelphia.

The Inquirer’s Bob Brookover wrote earlier today that the Rangers want a young, big-league reliever and a low-level prospect. Michael Schwimer, Jake Diekman, Jeremy Horst, Justin DeFratus, Phillippe Aumont, Josh Lindblom and B.J. Rosenberg all fit that description but the name thrown around the most is Schwimer’s.

Young is a seven-time All-Star with a career .301/.347/.444 slash line. He has 2,230 hits in 1,823 games with 177 career homeruns and 984 RBIs. Young’s 2011 season was one for the ages when he led the American League with 213 hits. That season he also put together a line of .338/.380/.474, hit 11 homeruns and knocked in 106 runs.

As a 35-year-old in 212, Young came back down to Earth. He posted a respectable .277 batting average but his on-base percentage dropped 68 points to .312. His .682 OPS was the lowest in his 13-year career.

Young would most likely play third base for the Phillies ahead of Kevin Frandsen and Freddy Galvis . Young isn’t a magician in the field but neither is Frandsen and his bat is much better than Galvis’.
