Legendary ESPN college basketball personality Dick Vitale joined Tony Bruno and Harry Mayes on Tuesday morning to give his take on the NCAA Tournament with his trademark bombastic flair.
“Jay Wright did a terrific job. I don’t think anybody, the way they started this year, would have ever anticipated them being in the tournament. I think the future is extremely bright,” Vitale said. “They’re a dangerous team but they have a tough matchup with Carolina.”
On La Salle:
“La Salle has been a surprise and brought back some excitement to the City of Brotherly Love. Again, they have a tough matchup with Boise State. Boise State is a club out of the Mountain West that can really cause some problems. [Michigan State head coach] Tom Izzo raved about them to me when he spoke to me about playing them earlier this year.”
“Temple has a tough battle with NC State, who has really underachieved all year. NC State has the potential to beat anyone. I did their game when they beat Duke and they were unbelievable that night.
“Bottom line with Temple is they need big play production from [Khalif] Wyatt, who is terrific. If he makes shots they’ll be tough to beat.”
On just how wide open this year’s Tournament is:
“I really do think it’s wide open, there’s no doubt about it. I think there are a lot of pretenders. I think there are a lot of teams that can win two games and make the Sweet 16. But there aren’t many teams that will win six in a row and be a National Champ. I think you separate the pretenders from the contenders when you start to talk about winning six games consecutively.”
On which Big 5 team has the best shot of winning its first game:
“I look at the NC State game, I would pick NC State if they play like NC State can play. If they play like they played for a portion of the season then Temple can beat them. I just think the next round, if I am Indiana I would be scared to play NC State. They would matchup with them really well. They’re gonna be cheering for Temple.”
None of the Big 5 teams are being given much of a chance to make a run this march. La Salle has 1000-1 odds to win it all while Villanova and Temple are both at 500-1.
